Chapecoense’s Copa Libertadores hopes have come to an end after the Brazilian side were docked three points for fielding a suspended player.
CONMEBOL announced the sanction on Tuesday, with Chapecoense knocked out of the Libertadores as Lanus were awarded a 3-0 win after defender Luiz Otavio was deemed ineligible to play on May 17.
With four points from five games heading into Tuesday’s final matchday, Chapecoense cannot overhaul Group 7 leaders Lanus (10 points) and Nacional (eight points) even with a win against Zulia.
Only three members of the travelling squad survived – Neto, Alan Ruschel and Jackson Follmann – as Chapecoense were left heartbroken and struggling to field a team.
